Academic Freedom in American Universities in the Digital Age:Challenges and Solutions

Abstract
In the digital age,as a core value of higher education,academic freedom has experienced profound impacts from the digital revolution regarding its existential space and developmental trajectory.Examining academic freedom in American universities during in the digital age,it can be found that:first,university faculty's freedom in research and publication has been significantly undermined,evidenced by restricted access to digital resources and limitations on research topics and publications;second,teaching freedom has been subjected to severe interference through a decline in teaching security and a reduction in teaching autonomy;third,faculty members' freedom of public expression has faced severe constraints through increasing policy regulations and internal surveillance.As a pivotal variable,digital technology not only reinforces traditional political and corporate interventions in academic freedom but also empowers the general public with substantive authority to influence academic discourse,thereby plunging American universities into a profound crisis of academic liberty.Confronted with the increasingly precarious situation,some American scholars,academic associations,and a few prestigious institutions have attempted to reaffirm their commitment to defending academic freedom through declarations,advocacy,and policy commitments.However,current indicators suggest that American academia has developed a defensive self-censorship culture,rendering the future prospects of academic freedom decidedly pessimistic.关键词
