Abstract
The Draft Settlement of the Hengzhou Missionary Case stipulated the Qing government's compensation obligations to the church for losses sustained in the 1900 Hengzhou Missionary Case, notably including the con-struction of a missionary memorial archway to"honor their names and perpetuate their legacy"as an independent reparations clause a rarity in the history of missionary case settlements. This unique stipulation arose from several factors:contextually, the case occurred during the Boxer Rebellion's sweep across northern China, prompting the church to enhance its influence in the south;geopolitically, the cultural-political distinctiveness of Hunan region and the implementation of the Southeast Mutual Protection Pact necessitated tailored measures to amplify missionary influence in this area;legally, the memorial archway,as a convergence of imperial authority, morality, and formal law,was closely linked to Chinese law. Therefore, the foreign powers included the archway clause in the settlement draft to legitimize the church, influenced by both the objective conditions and considerations of Chinese law, aiming to enhance the church's influence in the south and Hunan region.关键词
