Reinterpretation of the Emotional Relationship between Du Lanxian and the Pear Blossom Fairy in Pear Blossom Dream:From the Perspective of Freudian Psychoanalytic Theory

Abstract
The emotional relationship between Du Lanxian and the Pear Blossom Fairy in Pear Blossom Dream has been interpreted in various ways in academia,including as a homosexual relationship,a relationship of confidantes,and a sisterly bond.The author posits that the Pear Blossom Fairy is an idealized self-image that Du Lanxian ac-tively constructs based on excessive narcissistic emotions.Du Lanxian's unique performance of assuming a male persona and pursuing beauty is,in fact,a reversal of the traditional"vanilla beauty"trope,revealing her own erotic perspective within the imaginative space of gender transformation,and thereby gaining the power of love and the solace of being loved.This paper will apply Freud's psychoanalytic theory to reinterpret the emotional relationship between Du Lanxian and the Pear Blossom Fairy from psychological and pathological perspectives,and,in conjunc-tion with the specific living conditions of women during the Ming and Qing dynasties,argue that Du Lanxian's"ho-mosexual love"is in fact a silent protest and a covert breakout.关键词
