摘要
Abstract
The contemporary short story The Ascent portrays a tale of familial disintegration within an American household.Academic discussions predominantly focus on overt events or themes such as the airplane crash and drug prevalence.However,from the perspective of the dual narrative progression proposed by Chinese scholars,these elements constitute merely the overt storyline.The covert narrative progression of the story revolves around the protagonist's nostalgic pursuit for a sense of individual belonging and its implication.Through the interplay of overt and covert narrative progressions,Ron Rash artistically conveys the notion that American Southerners should adopt a proactive rather than a reclusive attitude towards life while reflecting on their tragic destiny,so as to construct a new spiritual community and an imaginative sense of belonging derived from the Southern literary tradition.关键词
