Abstract
In October 1935,Italy initiated an aggressive war against Abyssinia,prompting the League of Nations to immediately impose economic sanctions on Italy.Chinese intellectuals viewed this war as a precursor to the Sino-Japanese War and took the opportunity to assess the feasibility of the League of Nations'diplomacy.Advocates of the League of Nations,led by Hu Shih,proposed the concept of"the rise of the League of Nations",hoping to deter Japan through these sanctions,which sparked intense debates within the intellectual community.However,with the fall of Abyssinia and the lifting of sanctions in 1936,the collective security mechanism of the League of Nations suffered a fundamental blow,rendering"the rise of the League of Nations"an empty phrase.The controversy re-flected the divergence among intellectuals on the issue of the League of Nations,and its outcome mirrored the ebb and flow of internationalism and nationalism in the minds of intellectuals.The Italo-Abyssinian War further pro-pelled intellectuals towards a rational understanding of international organizations and directly influenced the diplo-matic ideology concerning the League of Nations during the Counter-Japanese War.关键词
