Abstract

[Purposes]This paper aims to investigate the adhesion mechanism of warm mix asphalt mixtures and explore new research methods of adhesion between warm mix asphalt and aggregates.[Methods]Atomic force microscope(AFM)was used to measure the adhesion of warm mix asphalt specimens with the separate addition of Sasobit-type warm mix additive H01(mass fractions of 1.0%,3.0%,and 5.0%,respectively)and surfactant-type warm mix additive H02(mass fractions of 0.3%,0.5%,and 0.7%,respectively).The Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR)model and surface energy theory were employed to convert the measured adhesion into asphalt surface energy.Subsequently,the anhydrous and hydrated adhesion work of asphalt-granite systems,as well as asphalt-basalt systems were calculated and compared with results from water boiling tests and water stability tests.Additionally,the retraction force curves of warm mix asphalt obtained via AFM were integrated to derive the adhesion index G,which was then correlated with asphalt surface energy.[Findings]The incorporation of both types of warm mix agents reduces the adhesion work of the warm mix asphalt-aggregate systems.The anhydrous adhesion work of warm mix asphalt-granite systems exceeds that of warm mix asphalt-basalt systems,while the opposite trend is observed for hydrated adhesion work.Water stability test results align with the adhesion work variation trends derived from AFM analysis for H01 warm mix asphalt-basalt systems but contradict those of H02 warm mix asphalt-basalt systems.A strong correlation is identified between the adhesion index G and asphalt surface energy.[Conclusions]Compared to warm mix asphalt-basalt systems,warm mix asphalt-granite systems exhibit greater susceptibility to moisture damage.The AFM-based method for determining adhesion work in asphalt-basalt systems is applicable to Sasobit-based warm mix asphalt but unsuitable for surfactant-based warm mix asphalt.The adhesion index G proposed in this study provides a new quantitative index for evaluating the adhesion of warm mix asphalt-aggregate systems.
