Abstract

[Purposes]This study aims to estimate the groundwater storage(GWS)change in the Xiangjiang River Basin by using data from gravity recovery and climate experiment(GRACE)and GRACE follow-on(GFO)satellites,namely GRACE/GFO satellites,and quantitatively characterize the drought characteristics of groundwater to reveal the variation law and the drought mechanism of groundwater in the Xiangjiang River Basin.[Methods]The data of total terrestrial water storage change monitored by GRACE/GFO satellites,combined with the measured and simulated component data of different hydrological models,were utilized.Based on the principle of conservation of mass,the GWS change in the Xiangjiang River Basin from 2002 to 2022 was estimated.[Findings]Good agreement was found between the GWS change in the Xiangjiang River Basin estimated from GRACE/GFO satellites and the one from ground observations.The component contribution rate of GWS changes reached 55%-67%,and it dominated in the Xiangjiang River Basin.From 2002 to 2022,10 moderate to extreme drought events were identified based on the GWS deficit index,with a total duration and total deficit of 88 months and-3 456 mm,respectively.Among the 10 drought events,the drought from July to December 2022 was the most severe,with an average GWS deficit of-84.0 mm per month and a total deficit of-503.7 mm.[Conclusions]GRACE/GFO satellites can better detect GWS changes in the Xiangjiang River Basin than models.Affected by karst hydrogeology conditions,the Xiangjiang River Basin has a relatively strong subsurface drainage capability,leading to larger GWS losses during extreme droughts.
