A study on the trajectory of change and relationship between parenting stress in parents of preterm in-fants discharged from the NICU

Abstract
Objective To explore the trajectory of parenting stress and the interrelationship in parents of preterm infants during the 6 months post-discharge,and provide a reference for formulating intervention measures.Methods A convenience sampling method was employed between March and December 2023.Data were collected from 213 preterm infants and their parents at 1,3 and 6 months after discharge from the hospital by using a general information questionnaire and Parenting Stress Index-Short Form.The cross-lagged panel model was utilized to analyze causal relationships between parental paren-ting stress dimensions.Results Mothers of preterm infants scored 95.12±12.81,89.69±9.91 and 78.60±12.20 on the Parenting Stress Scale-Short Form(PSS-SF)at 1,3 and 6 months post-discharge,respectively.Fathers'scores were 97.56±11.66,92.72±9.17,and 87.92±9.56 at the corresponding time points.Paternal parenting stress levels were significantly higher than maternal parenting stress levels(P<0.001).Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was a positive cor-relation between the maternal and paternal parenting stress of preterm infants at different time points(the r value ranged from 0.368 to 0.793,P<0.01).Cross-lagged analysis demonstrated that the parenting stress of mothers and fathers of preterm infants could predict each other(P<0.05).Conclusion The levels of parenting stress of parents of preterm infants gradually decreased after the preterm infants were discharged from the hospital.Fathers showed higher levels of parenting stress compared to mothers.Parental parenting stress is causal and intertwined.And healthcare professionals need to imple-ment family-based intervention programs to improve parenting stress among parents of preterm infants in order to improve their coping skills.关键词
