Abstract

It is important to investigate the leaching process of soil chromium for assessing the environmental risk of soil chromium contamination.The four US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)standard leaching methods(1311,1312,1313,and 1314)for leaching chromium from chromium-containing soils at different pH(4.0,6.0,and 8.0)are studied,and the leaching toxicity are analyzed.The chromium fractions leached by the four leaching methods are in the order EPA 1313(79.39%)>1314(69.48%)>1311(31.36%)>1312(12.56%).Total chromium leaching is higher in acidic soils than in alkaline soils.Cr(VI)is found only in alkaline soils(0.095%of total Cr).Cr(VI)leaching under the leaching conditions of EPA 1312,1313(pH>6.0),and 1314 accounts for 54.62%,101.26%,and 16.81%of the total Cr(VI)content,respectively.The chromium contamination toxicity index(CPTI)is higher in acidic soils than in alkaline soils,with the CPTI being the highest(3904.22)at the EPA 1313 method pH 2.0 leaching condition.Acidic soil leachate(EPA 1311 method)is more toxic to Photobacterium phosphoreum than alkaline soil.Chromium releases from soil are influenced by a combination of soil pH and leaching conditions,and the risk of chromium release needs to be assessed according to specific environmental factors.
