Root Morphological Differences of Tobacco Plants in Different Productivity Fields and Their Associations with Biomass and Nutrient Uptake

Abstract
[Objective]To reveal the root functional traits of tobaccos in different productivity fields of Hengyang tobacco-growing area and their associations with root productivity.This study is expected to provide scientific guidance for strengthening tobacco-leaf yield of the low-pro-ductivity fields in Hunan and even the whole country.[Method]The tobacco roots were collected from 30 fields of low-(10 fields),medium-(10 fields),and high-yielding(10 fields)in Hengyang.The structure,activity,biomass,and nutrient accumulation of the roots were meas-ured,and the relationships among them were analyzed.[Result]The results showed that the average root biomass of tobacco plants in high-yielding fields was 95.16 g/plant,which was significantly higher than that in medium-(81.74 g/plant)and low-yielding fields(75.09 g/plant).The average nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)accumulation of tobacco roots in high-yielding fields was 2.51 and 0.54 g/plant,respectively,and was significantly higher than that in middle-yielding fields(1.66 and 0.27 g/plant).Meanwhile,the average potassium accumulation of the tobacco roots in high-yielding fields(4.54 g/plant)was also significantly higher than that in low-yielding fields(3.32 g/plant).The root length,surface area,volume,connection degree,number of nodes,and number of root tips in high-yielding fields were significantly higher than those in low-yielding fields.Redundancy analysis showed that there were significant differences in root structure among the high-,medium-,and low-yielding fields,and this difference further led to differences in root biomass and nutrient accumulation.In high-yielding field,root biomass was significantly correlated with root pixel area,projected area,and others,as well as the root P accumula-tion was significantly correlated with root activity(P<0.05);in middle-yielding fields,root biomass was significantly correlated with root pixel area and fractal dimension,and root N accumulation was significantly correlated with root activity(P<0.05);in low-yielding field,root bio-mass was significantly correlated with pixel area,volume,surface area,and root activity(P<0.05).[Conclusion]Relatively poor root mor-phology,such as shorter root length,smaller root surface area,and less root connectivity,may be the key factors restricting the yield improve-ment of low-yielding tobacco field,and meanwhile,cultivating a good root system is conducive to improving tobacco yield.关键词
