Abstract

Most studies on extracting elevation control points from ICESat-2 altimetry data are based on the attribute information of ATL08 products.Good quality control has been achieved for the elevation accuracy of elevation con-trol points,but there is relatively little analysis on their spatial distribution and availability.To address this issue,an elevation control point extraction method assisted by optical stereo images information is proposed.Firstly,by u-sing the elevation and slope data obtained from optical satellite stereo images,the signal points of strong and weak beams are extracted from the ATL03 data.A high-precision control point fitting model is then constructed by analy-zing the data from the strong and weak beams.Multiple metrics,including the slope,number of key signal pho-tons,key signal photon ratio,and height difference,are calculated to refine the screening of candidate elevation control points.The laser elevation control points are extracted and their accuracies are verified by using a scene of Gaofen-7 stereo images in Dengfeng City,Henan Province and the high-precision digital elevation model(DEM)data within its coverage area.The experimental results show that the proposed method can extract high-precision el-evation control points with uniform spatial distribution.Elevation control points can also be extracted from flat ter-rain in the mountainous and hilly areas,and the root mean square error(RMSE)of the control point elevation is 0.50 m.After eliminating a small number of candidate elevation control points located in the seasonal cropland are-as,the RMSE can reach 0.41 m.The method proposed can effectively reduce the influence of the time difference in data source acquisition and the changes in ground cover on the elevation accuracy and the availability of the control points.This can provide more reliable elevation control benchmark data for optical stereo images to improve positio-ning capabilities and quality control.
