Abstract

Tin(Sn)isotopes constitute a non-traditional stable isotope system with significant tracing potential and value in fields such as astrochemistry,archaeology,petrology,and economic geology.This emerging isotope system is undergoing rapid development in international geochemistry.This paper reviews the analytical methods,the isotopic composition of different reservoirs,the fractionation mechanisms of tin isotopes,and their specific applications in planetary science,archaeology,and mineral deposits.The application of multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry(MC-ICP-MS)combined with the double-spike method has greatly improved the accuracy and efficiency of Sn isotope analysis,thereby promoting the development and application of Sn isotope geochemistry.The Sn isotope compositions of carbonaceous chondrites are similar to those of Earth,while ordinary chondrites have lower Sn isotope values.The overall Sn isotope composition of mantle rocks is slightly higher than that of crustal rocks.Redox reactions,vapor-fluid phase separation,cassiterite precipitation,partial melting,fractional crystallization,and melt-fluid interactions are important mechanisms leading to Sn isotope fractionation.Based on these results,the Sn isotope system has been preliminarily applied to tracing the early evolution of celestial bodies,the origin of bronzes,magma evolution,and the formation of mineral deposits.In addition,this paper summarizes and looks forward to the key scientific issues that should be addressed in future Sn isotope research.
