Abstract

The late Neoarchaean period is a crucial phase in the evolution of Earth's tectonics.Recent studies suggest this period as a key window for the transition from vertical to horizontal motion,supported by numerical simulations.West Shandong Province,located in the eastern part of the North China craton,preserves many Archean structures,making it an ideal site for analyzing early tectonic evolution.This study examines the Archean Taishan Group in the Mengyin area of West Shandong Province.Detailed structural and chronological analyses reveal that the Archean structures of the Taishan Group experienced deformation in three distinct stages:the first stage,DA-1 assemblage,includes early foliation S1 and tight foldF1.The second stage,DA2,is characterized by numerous vertical folds,foliation S2,and thrust faults.The third stage,DA-3,involves the development of extensive ductile shear zones and horizontal or near-horizontal lineation.Geochronological analysis of key samples,along with published data,indicates that these stages of deformation occurred within the timeframes of 2.56~2.53 Ga,2.53~2.52 Ga,and 2.52~2.50 Ga respectively.Geometric analysis of various deformation structures,including large vertical folds,thrust faults,and horizontal lineations,suggests that the evolution of these stages in western Shandong Province represents a comprehensive Archean orogeny.The deformation structures in the Taishan Group differ from dome and keel structures formed by vertical mechanisms but closely resemble those formed by lateral extrusion orogeny in the Phanerozoic.Therefore,it is proposed that the Archean horizontal structures in West Shandong Province may represent evidence of the earliest plate tectonic systems.
