Abstract

When a transient-based distance protection is applied under the phase-to-phase short-circuit fault occurring on the outgoing line of a doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG),the equivalent positive-sequence impedance of the wind farm will be significantly greater than the negative-sequence impedance,leading to a shortened protection range.Based on a detailed analysis of protection action characteristics under the phase-to-phase short-circuit fault,an im-proved method for setting the transient-based distance protection is proposed by combining the comprehensive equiva-lent impedance.First,the online calculation of equivalent positive-and negative-sequence impedances of the wind tur-bine is performed,thus obtaining the comprehensive equivalent impedance under the phase-to-phase short-circuit fault on the outgoing line of the wind turbine.Second,a correction impedance is introduced to adjust the original setting im-pedance,and this correction impedance is obtained by subtracting the comprehensive equivalent impedance under the phase-to-phase short-circuit fault from the original positive-sequence impedance of the wind turbine.Meanwhile,to pre-vent maloperation of the protection system,it is also crucial to ensure that the correction impedance should remain smaller than the total impedance of the protected line.The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through PSCAD simulations,indicating that when this method is applied under the phase-to-phase short-circuit fault occurring on the outgoing line of the wind turbine,the protection can act accurately and it also has a stronger capability to with-stand the transition resistance.
