Abstract

Pregnancy toxemia is one of the most critical causes of mortality in ewes carrying multiple fetuses(twins or more)during late gestation.It is a nutritional metabolic disorder characterized by glucose and lipid metabolism dysfunction caused by multiple factors.The hallmark symptoms of this disease include hypoglyce-mia,hyperketonemia and neurological dysfunction.In late gestation,ewes carrying multiple fetuses experience a dramatic increase in fetal energy demands,leading to insufficient glucose supply.This forces the maternal body to excessively mobilize fat reserves,resulting in the overproduction of ketone bodies(such as β-hydroxy-butyrate and aceto-acetate)and subsequent hyperketonemia.The core pathogenesis lies in the imbalance be-tween inadequate maternal nutrient intake(particularly a deficiency in readily fermentable carbohy-drates)and the surge in energy requirements for rapid fetal growth,ultimately causing a negative energy balance in the ma-ternal body.This article systematically analyzed pregnancy toxemia from perspectives including its etiology,di-agnostic methods,pathogenesis,molecular regulatory mechanisms,and nutritional prevention strategies,provi-ding scientific guidance for the prevention and treatment of pregnancy toxemia in practical mutton sheep pro-duction.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2025,37(7):4209-4219].
