Abstract

[Purpose]This study investigated the growth patterns and wood properties of four indigenous broadleaf tree species fol-lowing stand improvement in Southern Guangxi,aiming to provide a basis for the sustainable management of indigenous broadleaf plantations.[Method]Four 20-year-old indigenous broadleaf tree species of Mytilaria laosensis,Michelia odora,Castanopsis hys-trix,and Betula alnoides were studied.Stem analysis was employed to determine the growth patterns of diameter at breast height(DBH),tree height,and individual timber volume and wood properties across different stand ages.[Result](1)At 20 years of age,the total increments in DBH and individual timber volume followed the trend of Mytilaria laosensis>C.hystrix>Michelia odora>B.alnoides,while that in tree height was in descending order of Mytilaria laosensis>Michelia odora>C.hystrix>B.alnoides.The cur-rent annual increment in DBH of Mytilaria laosensis and C.hystrix fluctuated considerably across ages,with both species demonstra-ting advantages in timber volume growth during the mid-to-late stages.The mean annual increments in DBH and tree height of Mich-elia odora increased gradually in the mid-to-late stages.B.alnoides reached quantitative maturity in timber volume growth near 18 years.(2)C.hystrix exhibited the highest air-dry density,while Mytilaria laosensis had the highest compressive strength parallel to grain.Michelia odora showed lower compressive strength parallel to grain than the other species(P<0.05).[Conclusion]The com-prehensive comparison of growth patterns and wood properties among the four indigenous broadleaf tree species suggests that Mytilar-ia laosensis and C.hystrix are suitable for large-diameter timber production,Michelia odora for early-stage afforestation,and B.al-noides for short-to-medium rotation timber production.In production,silvicultural practices should be adopted according to the spe-cific growth performance of each species.
