Preoperative medical coping strategies in patients with brain tumors:A cross-sectional study

Abstract
Objective:Brain tumor surgery,a high-risk intervention in neurosurgery,is commonly associated with significant preoperative anxiety.The coping strategies adopted by patients can directly influence perioperative stress responses,treatment adherence,and postoperative recovery.This study aims to investigate the current status of medical coping strategies in patients with brain tumors prior to surgery and explore their influencing factors,providing a theoretical basis for medical support. Methods:A single-center cross-sectional design was used.A total of 158 patients with brain tumors and hospitalized in the Department of Neurosurgery at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center between March 2023 and July 2024 were selected by convenience sampling.Data from general information questionnaires and the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire(MCMQ)were analyzed using univariate and multivariate statistical methods. Results:The mean scores for the three MCMQ dimensions,confrontation,avoidance,and resignation,were 17.26±2.68,16.85±3.23,and 16.67±2.39,respectively.Compared with national norms,all three dimension scores showed statistically significant differences(all P<0.05).Multiple linear regression revealed that education level and method of medical expense payment were significant predictors of confrontation(R2=0.186,P<0.001);age,payment method,and current employment status were key factors affecting avoidance(R2=0.407,P<0.001);while age and marital status significantly influenced resignation(R2=0.361,P<0.001). Conclusion:The MCMQ is a useful tool for identifying preoperative coping strategies in brain tumor patients.Patient characteristics can help healthcare providers develop targeted interventions to encourage more adaptive coping mechanisms.关键词
