Fracture development characteristics and fine description of the Xujiahe Formation in Western Sichuan:A case study of Xinchang Gas Field

Abstract

In the deep Sichuan Basin,tight sandstone gas reservoirs in the Xujiahe Formation feature sub-stantial reserve volumes.However,the current recovery rates remain low,demonstrating good potential for production expansion.Investigating the enrichment patterns of"fault-fold fracture bodies"has emerged as a breakthrough for achieving large-scale,efficient development and boosting reserves and production of deep tight sandstone gas.This study leverages the multi-attribute fusion technology of entropy,maximum likelihood,and curvature,grounded in artificial fault interpretation results,to conduct a fine description of"fault-fold fracture bodies."Key findings include:1)Fractures in the study area exhibit diverse genetic types and complex occurrences,with spatial distributions mainly controlled by faults and structural highs,thereby forming three"sweet spot"models:fault-fracture bodies,fold-fracture bodies,and fault-fold fracture bodies.2)Integrating entropy and maximum likelihood attributes enables precise delineation of fault-fracture body contours;positive curvature attributes effectively reveal fold-fracture body outlines;and fusing seismic attributes of both types outperforms conventional techniques in characterizing fault-fold fracture bodies.3)Fault-fold fracture bodies primarily occur in the structural core of the Xinchang Gas Field,with the LJ and GMZ areas identified as prime development zones.Actual drilling results demonstrate a 100%success rate in encountering fault-fold fracture bodies in new wells.The coincidence rate of effec-tive fracture prediction for each sand group has significantly increased from 45.9%to 86.4%,confirming favorable gas well testing and production outcomes.Overall,the study proves that fracture development in the Xujiahe Formation of Western Sichuan is governed by faults and structural highs.The established"fault-fold fracture body"geological model,coupled with multi-attribute fusion technology,offers a reliable approach to mapping their spatial distribution,thus providing a technical support for efficient explo-ration and development of deep tight sandstone gas resources.
