Abstract

To determine appropriate secondary protection measures for surge relief valves,this study focused on the characteris-tics of long-distance gravity pressurized flow systems.The method for analyzing pipeline transient flow was established based on the water hammer characteristic equations.Using Bentley Haestad Hammer software,a hydraulic transient simulation was conducted for the gravity flow section of the Shaheji branch in the Chuzhou water supply guarantee project for the Yangtze river delta integration demonstration zone.The study evaluated the protective performance of surge relief valves with four different diameters under the scenario of valve closure-induced water hammer at the pipeline terminus.Calculation results showed that the use of DN300,DN400,DN500 and DN600 four calibre water hammer relief valve transient process peak water pressure were 156.12,103.02,85.85 and 83.96 m,respectively,the boost ratio of 53.40,32.78,26.20 and 24.67,respectively,the pres-sure fluctuations at the end of the valve area were 11.47~156.47,11.47~103.66,11.47~79.76 and 11.47~75.29 m.By comparing the water hammer effect of different calibres of water hammer relief valves,it could be considered that increasing the calibres of water hammer relief valves can significantly improve the reduction effect of transient shut-off peak water pressure,but the increase in calibre existed in the phenomenon of marginal effect.Water hammer relief valve calibre selection for the main pipe diameter between 28.6%~35.7%was more appropriate.
