Abstract

[Objective]Reusing the backwash water from the filter tank in the water treatment plant(WTP)can not only effectively save water resources and energy consumption,but also significantly reduce the discharge of production wastewater from the WTP.At present,the exploration of the risks of backwash water reuse is not deep enough.Evaluating the risks of backwash water reuse,especially biological risks,is of great significance for ensuring the safety of drinking water.[Methods]The paper deeply explores the biological characteristics of backwash water in WTPs,systematically sorts out the factors that affect the composition of water biological communities,and analyzes the biological safety of backwash water reuse.[Results]The water quality of the backwash water in the filter is relatively complex,containing higher biomass and more complex microbial communities,and the risk of backwash water pollution is generally higher.Due to their different attachment abilities to microorganisms,different types of filter media release varying amounts and types of microorganisms during backwashing.The backwash cycle and backwash water source can cause microorganisms of different stability to enter the backwash water.Turbidity and dissolved organic carbon can promote the growth of some microorganisms in backwash water.It should be noted that opportunistic pathogens are currently an important factor that is easily overlooked but poses potential biological risks to drinking water safety.Some pathogens can resist conventional disinfection methods and cannot be detected due to entering a dormant state.After reuse,they awaken in the water supply network,increasing the biological risk.[Conclusion]To ensure the safety of backwash water reuse,on the one hand,it is necessary to establish a strict monitoring mechanism,select more advanced detection technologies,and comprehensively evaluate the risk of microbial reuse.On the other hand,it is necessary to strengthen the research and development of pre-treatment technologies for reuse water,and select the most suitable treatment process by combining traditional and emerging technologies.
