Abstract

[Objective]This study addresses the issue of elevated pH of raw water and high aluminum concentration in treated water at a southern water treatment plant(WTP),caused by excessive algal proliferation in the reservoir,which threatens the safety of residents'drinking water.The introduction of using carbon dioxide(CO2)to adjust pH is evaluated for its operational effectiveness,aiming to provide a basis for optimizing the operations of WTPs.[Methods]Following the implementation of the CO2 process on September 21,2023,system performance data were continuously monitored.Data from October 2023 to January 2024 were compared with data from the same period in 2021 and pre-implementation data,to analyze the impact of CO2 addition on coagulant usage,effluent water quality,and sludge transportation volume.An economic analysis is also conducted.[Results]When using slightly acidic aluminum sulfate as the coagulant,its unit consumption significantly decreased,with a 37.93%reduction in October 2023 compared to the previous month and a 30.08%reduction compared to the same period in 2021.When using polyaluminum chloride,the unit consumption remained consistent with 2021 levels.After using CO2,the average pH of the treated water decreased from 7.79 in the same period of 2021 to 7.69,and the average aluminum concentration decreased from 0.07 mg/L to 0.05 mg/L,a 28.6%reduction.Turbidity remained stable from 0.03 NTU to 0.09 NTU.Sludge transportation volume also decreased,with a 19.73%reduction in October 2023 compared to the previous month and a 7.08%reduction compared to 2021 when using slightly acidic aluminum sulfate.When using polyaluminum chloride,the sludge transportation volume from November 15,2023,to January 31,2024,decreased by 8.56%compared to 2021.The overall cost decreased by 0.003 8 yuan per cubic meter of water,compared to 2021.[Conclusion]The process of using CO2 to adjust pH can effectively optimize coagulant usage,improve water quality,reduce sludge transportation volume,and lower operational costs.Future efforts should focus on optimizing dosage control strategies,enhancing equipment maintenance,and exploring synergistic technological applications to further unlock the potential of this process and provide stronger support for the sustainable development of WTPs.
