Abstract

[Objective]Urban water treatment plants(WTPs)are critical components of water supply systems.Their diverse processes and complexity result in multiple carbon emission sources,often leading to inconsistencies in accounting boundaries and unclear carbon reduction potentials.To achieve China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and advance the green,low-carbon transformation of the water industry,it is crucial to comprehensively analyze the carbon emissions characteristics and mitigation potential of urban DWTP.[Methods]This study focused on an urban WTP in Shanghai.The carbon accounting boundaries were clearly defined,and using the emission factor method,combined with detailed production data,the carbon emissions from electricity consumption,chemical usage,sludge treatment,and transportation during the water treatment process were systematically assessed.The emission reduction benefits of the existing carbon reduction measures of WTP were also calculated.[Results]The findings indicated that the total carbon emissions for this WTP's water treatment process between July 2023 and June 2024 amounted to 3 795.04 t CO2-eq,with an emission intensity of 0.094 8 kg CO2-eq/m3.Electricity consumption and chemical usage were identified as the primary sources of emissions.Additionally,a preliminary assessment of the WTP's carbon reduction technologies showed that solar photovoltaic systems contributed to 39.01%of the total reduction,achieving an annual reduction of 318.90 t CO2-eq,making it the most effective carbon mitigation measure.[Conclusion]By implementing strategies such as the water-saving leadership program,photovoltaic power generation,smart platform integration,and zero-waste plant construction,this WTP has significantly reduced its carbon footprint.These measures provide theoretical support and technical guidance for urban WTPs in formulating energy-saving and emission reduction strategies,offering practical insights for high-quality,low-carbon development in Shanghai and across the national water supply sector.
