Effect of different harvest times on yield,qualities,and selenium(Se)content of sweet potato under selenium-enriched cultivation conditions

Abstract
[Objective]This study aims to investigate the formation characteristics of yield,quality,and selenium content in different types of sweet potatoes under selenium-rich cultivation conditions at varying harvest periods,providing a reference for efficient selenium-enriched sweet potato production.[Method]A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of foliar-applied organic selenium(Se,50 mg/L)on two sweet potato cultivars:the fresh-consumption type'Xinxiang'and starch-processing type'Shangshu 19'.Treatments were applied at the active vine growth phase(corresponding to tuber initiation stage),with six harvest time points from 75 to 125 days after transplanting(10-day intervals).Selenium distribution patterns among plant tissues,along with yield components and nutritional quality parameters of storage roots,were systematically analyzed.[Result]Under the selenium-enriched cultivation conditions,the tuber yield,commodity property,individual tuber weight,and starch yield of two different types sweet potatoes generally showed an increasing trends as the harvest time was delayed.The optimal effects were observed at harvest 125 days after transplanting.Selenium content in tubers generally exhibited an opposite trends compared with that of the yield.Under this condition,the highest selenium content(0.062 mg/kg)was observed in"Xinxiang"at 105 days after transplanting,while the lowest value occurred in"Shangshu 19"at 115.When the fresh-edible sweet potato"Xinxiang"was harvested at 85-115 days after transplanting,the protein content in its tuberous roots was relatively high.While for Shangshu 19,the protein content in tuberous roots was relatively high when harvested at 75-95 DAT.Both types of sweet potatoes harvested between 105th and 125th days had higher soluble sugar and starch contents,and soluble sugar peaked at 115th day harvest,which was beneficial for sugar accumulation.Additionally,different types of sweet potatoes reached the lowest gelatinization enthalpy at 105th day,being favorable for starch gelatinization,and exhibited significantly higher breakdown values under harvesting 125th day,to improve tuber palatability.[Conclusion]Generally speaking,under selenium-enriched cultivation conditions,when the fresh-edible sweet potato"Xinxiang"and the starch-type sweet potato"Shangshu 19"are harvested at 105 days and 125 days after transplanting respectively,it is possible to achieve a coordinated improvement in the yield and quality of tuberous roots while taking into account the absorption of selenium elements.关键词
