Impact of adolescent intrinsic motivation in playing online games on addictive behavior:moderating effect of self-control

Abstract

Objective To explore the moderating role of self-control between intrinsic motivation and addictive behavior in adolescents-playing online games.Methods A cluster random sampling method was used to select 1 000 adolescents as survey participants.They completed the questionnaire on online games intrinsic motivation,the questionnaire on self-control,and the questionnaire on online games addictive behavior.A total of 809 valid responses were obtained.The data were statistically analyzed.Results Online game intrinsic motivation was significantly negatively correlated with self-control and significantly positively correlated with online game addiction.Self-control was significantly negatively correlated with online game addictive behavior.Intrinsic motivation significantly positively predicted addictive behavior in online games(B=0.36,P<0.001).Self-control significantly negatively predicted addictive behavior(B=-0.51,P<0.001).The interaction between intrinsic motivation and self-control was significant(B=0.11,P<0.01).The impact of intrinsic motivation on addictive behavior was moderated by self-control.Specifically,when self-control was high,the impact of intrinsic motivation on addictive behavior was weakened.Conclusion Self-control can buffer the impact of intrinsic motivation on online game addictive behavior in adolescents.
