Abstract

Objective To explore the impact of internal and external clues on the processing of picture storybooks'information in children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD).Methods Thirty children with ASD and 30 typically developing children were selected as research subjects.The SMI RED-500 eye tracker was used to record eye movement index data while the subjects read processed picture storybooks.The time to first fixation,fixation duration,and fixation count on the target areas were analyzed.Results There were significant differences in eye movement index data between children with ASD and typically developing children.In the presence of clues,children with ASD exhibited increased fixation time on certain areas of interest in the picture storybooks.Conclusion Children with ASD are able to read the content of picture storybooks,and clues prompting helps them attend to visual clues in picture storybooks.Therefore,using picture storybooks combined with clues prompting may be a viable method to cultivate joint attention in children with ASD.
