Abstract

As a structure that is exposed to atmospheric conditions,steel angle in transmission towers may become corroded during service.This study conducted tensile tests on Q355 equal-leg steel angle with single-sided connections,commonly used in transmission tower structures.Local corrosion was simulated by mechanically cutting the steel angle,and 21 specimens were designed,including one comparison group without damage,two groups with bolt hole corrosion,and four groups with end corrosion.The study investigated the effects of different bolt hole diameters,corrosion locations,and corrosion depths on the tensile performance of steel angle and proposed a practical calculation method for the residual tensile capacity of corroded steel angle.The results showed that all steel angles fractured at the bolt hole.The tensile capacity of the specimens decreased due to different types of localized corrosion,with greater corrosion depth resulting in a more significant reduction in tensile capacity.The most pronounced decrease was observed in the steel angle with a 2 mm deep end corrosion on the inner side of the connected leg,showing a 17.1%reduction compared to the undamaged specimen.The impact of bolt hole corrosion on the tensile capacity of steel angle was minimal,and the steel angle with a bolt hole diameter of 27.5 mm exhibited the largest reduction of only 2.6%,which can be considered negligible.Relevant design codes do not account for the impact of localized corrosion on the tensile capacity of steel angle,may lead in unconservative result.The formula proposed in this study can accurately predict the ultimate tensile capacity of corroded steel angle.
