摘要

Abstract

Subfossil wood is a valuable and non-renewable resource, with its unique formation mechanism imparting distinguished color and exceptional color stability.Research in this area not only aids in the protection and utilization of subfossil wood, but also provides insights for the development of methods to preserve wood color in general. In this study,New Zealand swamp kauri wood, hemlock, and Norway spruce modern wood samples were subjected to accelerate light aging test. The sample chemical changes during the aging process were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The light absorbance of the samples before and after the aging were compared using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results showed that the color difference values of the hemlock and Norway spruce samples after 480 h accelerated aging were 18.02 and 22.70,respectively,while the value of the swamp kauri samples was only 3.65.The light absorbance changes of the samp kauri samples before and after aging were mainly limited to the transitional band between UV and visible light, which is difficult to be detected by naked eyes. However, the absorbance of the two modern coniferous woods significantly increased in the visible light band, and the color of the wood turned dark yellow. The color stability of the extracted swamp kauri samples was similar to the un-extracted samples, and its ash content was only 0.06%.It could therefore be suggested that the extractives and metal ions were not the major contributors to color stability. It was found that all the three samples experienced oxidative degradation during the accelerated aging process, and considerable carboxylic acid structures were generated. The modern coniferous woods underwent severe degradation of lignin during photoaging, with the main products being colored quinones that cause significant sample color changes. However, during the formation of swamp kauri, extensive degradation of hemicelluloses occurred, along with condensation reactions in lignin. These processes led to the breaking of β-O-4 linkages in the aliphatic branches and a reduction in the original chromophores. The phenyl nuclei were then re-connected by C-C bonds. These structural changes blocked the major chromophore forming reaction pathways during photo degradation and made the cell wall structure more stable. It could be concluded that the degree and oxidation products of swamp kauri wood during the accelerated aging were different from those of the modern woods, and the concentration of newly formed conjugated structures could not reach the level of modern woods, the color stability was improved as a result.
