One-Dimensional PEMFC Low-Temperature Cold-Start Transient Modeling Study

Abstract
Aiming at the problem of cold-start failure of proton exchange membrane fuel cells due to ice blockage at low temperatures,a one-dimensional transient variable-temperature multiphase model of proton exchange membrane fuel cells has been established based on COMSOL by coupling the equations of the diffusion layer,catalytic layer,and the transfer and phase transition of water in the membrane.The model considers water freezing below 273.15 K to investigate the effects of constant current output,film thickness,initial water content of the film,electrode material,and ambient temperature on the cold start performance of PEMFC.The results show that lower current density,membrane thickness,and initial water content result in less heat production and delayed icing rate,which leads to slower degradation of the battery performance;the use of metallic bipolar plate materials can improve the cold-start performance of fuel cells by increasing the battery temperature faster during cold-starting;the ambient temperature determines the success of the battery cold-starting,and there exists a limiting temperature to achieve the success of the cold-starting of the battery by relying on external heating.关键词
