Abstract

As for coal tar pitch(CTP),it was difficult to avoid the formation of quinoline insoluble induced by excessive dehydrogenation during high temperature treatment,which destroyed the spinning performance of spinnable pitch and effected the mechanical properties of isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber.Petroleum residue(PR)is abundant of alkyl and naphthenic structure,pyrolyzing and generating free radicals during carbonization.Therefore,the co-carbonization of CTP and PR were used to synthesize spinnable pitch so as to improve the spinning performance of spinnable pitch and the mechanical properties of resultant carbon fiber.The alkyl and naphthenic structure were intro-duced into the spinnable pitch through the mutual cross-linking of CTP molecule and PR molecule during co-carbonization reaction.The synergism effect prevented excessive polymerization of coal tar pitch.In this paper,three isotropic spinnable pitches were prepared by co-carbonization between CTP and PR with different mass ratios.After melt spinning,oxidative stabilization and carbonization,the isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber was obtained.The molecular structure of spinnable pitch was charac-terized by elemental analysis,Fourier infrared spectroscopy,thermogravimetric analysis,13C nuclear magnetic resonance and MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry,and the effects of the introduced alkyl and naphthenic structure on its spinning performance and the mechanical properties of resultant carbon fiber were investigated.The spinnable pitch with a co-carbonization ratio of CTP to PR of 4∶1 showed high spinning performance,because its molecular structure is more linear.The obtained pitch-based carbon fiber exhibited excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of(935±28)MPa and Young's modulus of(51.6±2.2)GPa,which were higher than those of mechanical properties of pitch-based carbon fiber produced alone from coal tar pitch.The co-carbonization by two different substances provideds an effective method for improving the mechanical properties of isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber.
