"Shao Di"(少帝)and"Marquis of Beixiang"(北乡侯):A Reassessment of Liu Yi's Dual Appellation in the Annals of the Book of Later Han(后汉书)

Abstract
Departing from the historiographical convention established since the Dongguan Hanji(东观汉记),a Chinese text chronicling the history of the Eastern Han Dynasty(25-220 A.D.),in which Liu Yi was consistently referred to as"Mar-quis of Beixiang"(北乡侯),Fan Ye adopts a different titular approach.In the annals section of the Book of Later Han(后汉书),he employed dual appellations of"Shao Di"(少帝,literally"Young Emperor")and"Marquis of Beixiang"(北乡侯)for Liu Yi.Although later scholars have extensively analyzed the"Shao Di"designation,significant interpretive gaps remain.The ti-tle"Marquis of Beixiang"(北乡侯)represented the Eastern Han court's definitive political categorization of Liu Yi's status,whereas the"Shao Di"designation reflected Fan Ye's historiographical approach that preserved Han-Jin historiographical con-ventions while incorporating his own understanding of the Eastern Han history.关键词
