Abstract

In response to the significant accumulation of coal gangue and the low utilization rate of resources in Ningxia,this study attempts to improve the loess in Tongxin County using local coal gangue.Laboratory tests were conducted to analyze the variation in collapsibility of loess enhanced with different proportions of coal gangue.Additionally,scanning electron microscopy(SEM)was employed to reveal the microscopic mechanisms behind the enhancement of loess by coal gangue,followed by a comparative analysis of the experimental results with existing studies.The results indicate that the incorporation of crushed coal gangue into the loess significantly reduce its collapsibility.When the proportion of coal gangue is 15%,the collapsibility coefficient of the enhanced loess is 0.014,which is 64.1%lower than of untreated loess,and the collapsibility is eliminated.Microscopic structure analysis shows that the addition of coal gangue leads to the formation of cementing substances among loess particles,resulting in a reduced porosity,smaller pore sizes,and a transition of point contact to surface contact,increasing the contact area between particles and densifying the overall structure.When the coal gangue content exceeds 6%,the effectiveness of the improved loess surpasses that of gasification slag.Additionally,the effects of coal gangue on collapsibility are comparable to those of fly ash,with both showing optimal improvement at a content of 15%.The findings suggest that coal gangue from Ningxia can effectively eliminate the collapsibility of moderately collapsible loess in Tongxin County.
