Abstract

This paper constructs an analytical framework of"traditional practice—policy in-centives—farmer behavior".Using survey data from 1,034 farmers across Southwest,Northwest,and the Huanghuaihai regions,the paper empirically examines the impact of traditional practices and policy incentives on farmers' adoption behavior(both adoption decisions and normativity)re-garding Maize-Soybean Relay Strip Intercropping(MRSI)technology through the application of the Heckman model.The results showed that:(1)Both traditional practice and policy incentives can significantly influence farmers' technology adoption behavior.Specifically,while traditional practice significantly promotes farmers' adoption decisions,it notably reduces adoption normality,demonstrating a"double-edged sword"effect.Subsidized incentives effectively enhance both a-doption decisions and normality,while guided incentives primarily improve normality.(2)These effects emerge as traditional practice and policy incentives shape farmers' adoption decisions through generated ease of technology effectiveness and use,while simultaneously impacting nor-mality via formed attribute perceptions.(3)Interaction analyses find that when the policy is imple-mented singularly,guided incentives promote both technology adoption decisions and normality a-mong farmers with traditional practice experiences.When combined,both subsidized and guided incentives are effective in promoting both technology adoption decisions and normality.(4)Hetero-geneity analysis finds that older generations of farmers and smallholder farmers are more suscepti-ble to the influence of traditional practices,while younger generations of farmers and largeholder farmers show a more pronounced response to policy incentives.When the subsidy amount is set at 200 yuan per mu,policy incentives have a more optimal effect on farmers' technology adoption decisions and normality.Based on these findings,this paper recommends focusing on improving the subsidy system,strengthening technical training,and implementing differentiated policies to promote MRSI.
