Output Characteristics and Equivalence Analysis of Grid-forming Converters in Complex Application Scenarios

Abstract
Due to the global emphasis on environmental pollution issues and the depletion of fossil energy sources,technologies for new power systems with a high penetration of renewable energy have been rapidly developing.However,traditional grid-following power electronic converters,unlike conventional synchronous machines,cannot provide voltage and frequency support for the system,thereby increasing the risk of system instability.To address this issue,grid-forming(GFM)converters have been proposed.By designing power synchronization loop control laws to regulate the port voltage,these converters achieve the capability of"forming the grid voltage source."Based on this concept,GFM converters have been successfully applied in microgrid systems.However,as the energy transition progresses,the simplified conditions under which grid-forming control techniques operate in some microgrids are no longer applicable.Consequently,the output characteristics of GFM converters in more complex application scenarios urgently need to be analyzed and summarized.Therefore,this paper first analyzes the small-signal models of typical grid-forming control methods within the time scale of power loop control.Based on the existing models,it then summarizes the output characteristics of various typical GFM converters under different scenarios.Finally,concerning the stability issues in systems with GFM converters,this paper,for the first time,systematically summarizes the influence of two key stability factors—"damping"and"impedance"—on the stability of GFM converters.Additionally,it analyzes the equivalence conditions among different typical grid-forming control methods.关键词
