Abstract

Arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM)and ectomycorrhizal(EcM)symbioses contribute significantly to the species diversity and abundance of plants,playing irreplaceable roles in maintaining biodiversity.Diameter class structure is an important feature of populations,and analyzing the diameter class structure of individuals in terms of survival,mortality,and recruitment provides insights into the current status and future trajectory of populations.Therefore,the analysis of diameter class structure of AM and EcM plants is of great significance for the maintenance of community biodiversity and targeted conservation of plants.To explore the reasons for the differences in dominance and species diversity of AM and EcM plants in communities,the 20 hm2 permanent plot in the Dinghushan subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest as a platform was used to analyze the differences in population characteristics of AM and EcM plants from the perspective of diameter class structure of dominant species.The results showed that surviving individuals of AM plants were predominantly small trees,with a diameter class distribution showing an"L"or inverted"J"shape;whereas surviving individuals of EcM plants include a higher proportion of medium-sized trees,with a diameter class distribution showing a peaked or inverted"J"shape.The mortality of AM plants primarily affects small tree individuals,while the mortality of EcM plants involves both small and medium-sized tree individuals.The recruited individuals of EcM plants have larger diameters compared to AM plants.The differences in diameter class structure between AM and EcM plants in surviving and recruited individuals may be two important reasons for the differential dominance of these two plants in communities.EcM plants have a greater reserve of small-diameter individuals for population renewal and a higher proportion of medium-diameter individuals for competitive advantage.Simultaneously,they rely on relatively large-diameter individuals as the main source of recruitment,which enhances their competitive ability in resource acquisition compared to AM plants,leading to their dominant position in the community and making them the principal species in the Dinghushan subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest.
