Abstract

To further investigate the growth patterns of sagittal otoliths in Trichiurus lepturus,this study analyzed biological data and sagittal otolith samples collected during exploratory fishing off the coast of Iran in the Gulf of Oman from May to July 2018.Otolith weight(WO),otolith area(AO),and otolith length(LO)were selected as morphological indicators,and the relationship between otolith growth and fish size was examined through variance analysis.The results showed that as the fish's anal length increased,the mean values of WO,AO,and LO for both female and male individuals gradually increased.Among groups with anal lengths less than 430 mm,extremely significant differences were found in mean values of WO,AO,and LO(P<0.01).However,in groups with anal lengths exceeding 430 mm,no significant differences were observed in WO and LO values(P>0.05),or the difference in AO was not obvious among groups with anal lengths greater than 480 mm(P>0.05).This suggested that otolith morphology undergoes substantial changes until the anal length reaches 430 mm.Additionally,signifi-cant differences were detected in mean WO/AO ratios between female and male individuals in groups with anal lengths below 280 mm.For female individuals,the variation in mean WO/AO ratios followed the overall sample trend.In the group with anal lengths larger than 480 mm,the mean WO/AO values decreased with increasing anal length,indicating uneven otolith growth and a gradual decline in otolith growth rate with increasing anal length.
