Abstract

This paper presents a concise review of conservation and restoration projects for five key heritage components along Beijing's Central Axis during its UNESCO World Heritage nomination process:the Imperial Ancestral Temple,Zhengyang Gate,the Temple of Heaven,the Altar of Agriculture,and Yongding Gate.Through representative case studies,the restoration initiatives are systematically analysed from four critical perspectives,which highlights that conservation design for World Heritage sites must be guided by the Outstanding Universal Value of heritage components,with technical restoration processes emphasising in-depth research and interpretation of embedded cultural values.Secondly,traditional craftsmanship should be rigorously implemented in conservation projects,accompanied by applicability studies and experiments.Thirdly,there is an imperative to strengthen historical document research and advance the application of scientific conservation technologies.Finally,the working model led by conservation architects-in-charge,which prioritises professional expertise and coordinates multi-disciplinary teams,has emerged as a significant practical approach in contemporary cultural heritage preservation.The paper further emphasises that the entire implementation process of conservation projects constitutes a crucial method for transmitting traditional craftsmanship heritage.
