The impact of the Yangtze River Economic Belt development strategy on industrial water pollution intensity

Abstract
The Yangtze River Economic Belt development strategy is a long-term and complex systemic project.Its large-scale measures of"closure,transformation,relocation,and upgrading"have effectively reduced the total industrial wastewater discharge but inevitably hurt short-term economic growth.Therefore,studying the impact and heterogeneity of this strategy on industrial water pollution intensity,while considering its effects on economic growth and total emissions,aligns more closely with the connotation of high-quality regional development.Based on panel data from 284 prefecture-level and above cities from 2009 to 2019,a difference-in-differences(DID)model is used to evaluate the impact of the strategy on industrial water pollution intensity.The results show that the Yangtze River Economic Belt development strategy significantly reduces industrial water pollution intensity,but with a lag effect.Green technology innovation and environmental regulation are the main channels through which the strategy affects industrial water pollution intensity.The strategy has the strongest inhibitory effect on industrial water pollution intensity in cities in the middle reaches,followed by those in the upper reaches,and the weakest in those in the lower reaches.Compared to cities along the Yangtze River,those that are not along the Yangtze River benefit more.Cities within 400 km of the Yangtze River experience significant reductions in industrial water pollution intensity due to the Yangtze River Economic Belt development strategy.关键词
