Abstract

The recycling and regeneration of plastics are one of the important means to solve plastic pollution and achieve sustainable development.To investigate the structural changes of recycled high-density polyethylene(HDPE),multiple melt-processing methods were employed to simulate the generation process of scrap materials.The structural evolution of HDPE with different processing histories was studied using various characterization techniques,including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM&EDS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),and thermogravimetric analysis(TG).The SEM&EDS results indicated that the fracture surface morphology of HDPE became rougher,with a decrease in carbon content and an increase in oxygen content.FTIR tests showed that with increasing processing cycles,oxygen-containing functional groups such as C=O and—OH appeared in HDPE,and the carbonyl index,vinyl index,and crystallinity index all increased.XRD analysis revealed a similar trend in crystallinity changes,with no change in crystal form.XPS analysis provided detailed insights into the different chemical environments of carbon and oxygen elements on the sample surface.Thermal property tests confirmed that the crystallinity and thermal stability of HDPE both exhibited a trend of first decreasing and then increasing,which is consistent with the results of infrared spectroscopy.
