Aquaculture Tailwater Treatment with a Microalgae-Indigenous Bacteria Co-culture

Abstract
In this study,we investigated nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency,extracellular poly-meric substances,and the indigenous bacterial community in aquaculture wastewater with a co-culture of microalgae and indigenous bacteria and characterized tailwater after treatment with this co-culture sys-tem.We aimed to assess the feasibility of utilizing microalgae for purification of aquaculture wastewa-ter.A strain of the green microalgae Scenedesmus sp.,isolated from aquaculture wastewater,was selected for study,and four treatment groups were prepared:indigenous bacteria without Scenedesmus sp.in untreated aquaculture wastewater;Scenedesmussp.cultivated in sterilized aquaculture wastewater;indige-nous bacteria+Scenedesmussp.cultivated in untreated aquaculture wastewater;Scenedesmussp.cultivat-ed in BG11 growth medium.The first three treatments were used to compare nitrogen and phosphorus removal from aquaculture wastewater,and the latter three treatments were used to compare intracellular nutrients of macroalgae.The initial biomass of microalgae for all groups was 0.12 g/L,and the experiment lasted for 120 h.The removal rates of total nitrogen,total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen in the indige-nous bacteria+Scenedesmussp.group was higher than in the other two treatments,with respective remov-al rates of 71.37%,100%and 100%,all meeting the discharge standard for aquaculture wastewater.When culture tailwater replaced the BG11 medium,the lipid content of Scenedesmus sp.increased,with lipid contents of 30.23%in the Scenedesmussp.group and 38.34%in the co-culture group of indigenous bac-teria+Scenedesmussp.,significantly higher(P<0.05)than the 15.23%in the BG11 group.The lipid con-tent in the co-culture group was 8.11%higher than in the algae group indicates that the algae-bacteria in-teraction increased the lipid content of algae cells.In the co-culture,Scenedesmus sp.reduced the rich-ness and diversity of the indigenous bacteria community,decreasing the relative abundance of Bacteroid-ota(relative abundance 47.55%)and Firmicutes(relative abundance 14.69%)in the aquaculture waste-water,and Porphyrobacter(relative abundance 57.11%)became the dominant species.The results of this study provide a theoretical basis and a general procedure for treating aquaculture tailwater with micro-algae to attain a circular economy in aquaculture.关键词
