Abstract

In this study,we explored the effects of different algae replenishment strategies on sludge granule characteristics,pollutant removal efficiency,and microbial community composition,as well as the mechanisms of algal-bacterial granule formation in the sequencing batch reactor(SBR)system.The aim of the study was to reveal the mechanisms of algal-bacterial synergy under different augmentation strategies and provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing the algal-bacterial granular sludge process.Two algae replenishment strategies(treatment A:continuous algal feeding;treatment B:intermittent algal feeding)were set to culture bacteria-algae granular sludge,with synthetic wastewater as the input and chlorella as the algae species in the SBR system.When the algal-bacterial granules had matured,the mean granule sizes were(0.78±0.08)mm in treatment A and(0.97±0.05)mm in treatment B.The contents of chlorophyll-a were(4.83±0.04)mg/g in treatment A and(6.28±0.04)mg/g in treatment B,and the average removal rates of COD,NH4+-N and TP from the wastewater were,respectively,94.39%,87.99%,and 88.86%in treatment A and 94.45%,88.19%,and 91.12%in treatment B.Intermittent algae augmentation enhanced the pollutant removal capacity of algal-bacterial granular sludge,and facilitated the colonization of algae on the granule surface,increased algal cell growth,and stimulated the release of extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)by both algae and bacteria.The dominant bacteria genera in treatments A and B were Zoogloea,Thauera,Flavobacterium and Candidatus Accumulibacter(phosphorus accumulating bacteria).Thauera was the source of increased polysaccharide(PS)in the EPS.In addition,the formation of granular sludge in treatment A primarily depended on algal adhesion and growth,while treatment B utilized an algal barrier.The intermittent algae replenishment strategy for algae-bacteria granule cultiva-tion significantly shortened the formation of granules(10 days)and enhanced bacterial aggregation and degradation of carbonaceous pollutants.
