Abstract

The application of algal-bacterial symbiotic systems(ABSS)for wastewater treatment has emerged as an active research area in recent years.In this study,we summarized the fundamental princi-ples,environmental influencing factors,and application scenarios of algal-bacterial symbiotic systems in different reactors,aiming to provide valuable insights for their practical engineering implementation.Based on the statistics of annual publications and VOSviewer-based visual analysis,we found that pub-lications on algal-bacterial symbiosis has trended upward over the past three decades,plateaued in recent years,and the research focus on algal-bacterial symbiosis is shifting from basic theoretical exploration to practical engineering applications.The transformation of inorganics in wastewater into secondary metab-olites in biomass has emerged as a new ABSS hotspot.Gene exchange,material transfer,and signal trans-duction constitute the symbiotic foundation for synergistic interactions between algae and bacteria.The efficacy of ABSS in removing pollutants such as nutrients,antibiotics,and heavy metals is highly de-pendent on the compatibility of organisms with environmental conditions including illumination,pH,and salinity.These factors substantially impact the pollutant removal efficiency of ABSS by modulating the physiological activities of algae and bacteria,their metabolic pathways and synergistic interactions.In practical applications,open reactors are characterized by simpler operation and lower cost but are vulner-able to external environmental interference and display poor microbial community stability.Conversely,closed reactors enhance microbial community stability and achieve superior treatment performance,but the costs of equipment and operation are higher and maintenance requirements are more extensive.Thus,for a specific application,the tradeoffs between open and closed reactors must be considered to select the best option.
