Optimization of crop planting structure in different hydrologic years under economic-water footprint-carbon sink objectives:a case study of Heshun County,Shanxi Province

Abstract
The repercussions of climate change,water scarcity,and the irrational allocation of cultivated land have had a significant impact on food production.Adjustments must be made to the crop cropping structure,as such adjustments are essential to enhance regional food security and ecological protection and to promote sustainable agricultural development.This study developed and implemented a multi-objective optimization model based on economic benefits,crop water footprint,and farmland carbon sink capacity in Heshun County,Shanxi Province.The overarching objective of the study is to achieve a balance by minimizing the crop water footprint,maximizing the net economic return,and enhancing the farmland's net carbon sink capacity.To accomplish these objectives,the planting area optimization schemes for different types of hydrological years-namely,wet,normal water and dry water years-were derived using the Genetic Algorithm Ⅱ.The study's findings revealed that there was an increase in regional net benefits in all three hydrological years(wet,normal water and dry water years)after the optimization,with total net benefits increasing by 17.76%,44.06%,and 87.79%,respectively.Moreover,there was a significant enhancement in the capacity of farmland to act as a net carbon sink,with increases of 5.85%in wet years,9.74%in normal years,and 12.46%in dry water years.Specifically,the area dedicated to the cultivation of corn and sorghum exhibited a marked increase in wet years,while the area allocated to maize and millet showed a significant increase in dry water years.Concurrently,the area devoted to legumes and other cereals demonstrated a substantial increase in normal water years.Conversely,the area allocated to tuber crops underwent a decline following optimization in all three types of hydrological years.It is therefore recommended that the proportion of dry crop planting be appropriately reduced in regions with high rainfall,while the proportion of dry crop planting is to be increased in regions with low rainfall.The modeling results indicate that it is possible to increase soil carbon storage and reduce water consumption while maintaining economic benefits,thus enhancing the comprehensive benefits of cultivated land.The objective of this study is to enhance food security and ecological security by optimizing the crop planting area.The study seeks to direct the agricultural development of Heshun County in Shanxi Province toward a more sustainable trajectory,and lay a solid foundation for further exploration of crop planting area optimization in the future.关键词
