This paper presents the findings of years of investigation in the field of carbonate sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy,from the groundbreaking works of Tibana and Terra(1981)and Terra(1990a)to the recent study conducted by Melo(2021).We are pleased to offer this paper as a fitting tribute to Paulo Tibana,a geologist who dedicated his life to studying carbonate rocks and the mentorship of professionals in Petrobras and Brazilian Univer-sities.This research could not have been possible without the support from Petrobras and the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geologia e Geofisica da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte.We are grateful to Gustavo Barros for his drafting skills,and we give special thanks to the editor and reviewers for their insightful and constructive reviews and editorial comments. （1981）
