Low-cost GNSS Daily Averaged Water Level Gauge for Inland Water Bodies:Methods and System

Abstract
Water level is a critical hydrological parameter for wetlands,lakes,and rivers,supporting applications such as ecological monitoring and natural disaster early warning.Existing water level monitoring methods often rely on manual measurements or expensive professional stations,leading to low accuracy,high cost,and poor real-time performance in remote areas.To address these challenges,we design and develop a low-cost,non-contact daily average water level sensor based on Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry(GNSS-IR).An iterative adaptive data quality control algorithm is proposed to overcome the limited multipath suppression capability of low-cost GNSS antennas and chip-level receivers.This method combines Empirical Mode Decomposition(EMD)with an iterative maximum between-class variance approach to remove abnormal data,resulting in a Root Mean Square Error(RMSE)of 6 cm compared with reference water levels.The system is constructed using a GNSS microstrip antenna,a low-cost GNSS board,a 4G module,and a Raspberry Pi.Total cost is kept within 1 000 yuan,with daily average water level accuracy reaching the centimeter level.The system supports local real-time data processing,adaptive quality control,and remote data transmission.Field experiments yield a correlation coefficient of 0.920 5 and an RMSE of 2.03 cm.Results demonstrate that the proposed system enables accurate and real-time water level monitoring,offering a practical solution for remote and underserved areas.关键词
