The Infiltration and Constraint of Local Customs on Regional Operas:A Case Study of Four Regional Opera Genres in Northern Jiangsu

Abstract
Regional operas are imbued with distinctive local characteristics due to the customs,lifestyles,and emotional expressions prevalent in different regions.These unique"local accents"are particularly adept at evoking"nostalgia",a quality that other art forms often struggle to replicate.This paper analyses the characteristics of regional operas and their underlying causes from three perspectives:musical systems,on-stage language and performing skills.Four regional opera genres from Northern Jiangsu are used as case studies:Jiangsu Bangzi Opera,Liuqin Opera,Huaiju Opera and Huaihai Opera.In terms of music,each opera genre retains its independence and distinct style,enabling identification of the opera being performed simply by listening to its instrumental interludes.In terms of lyrics,the outstanding traditional repertoires of regional operas play a crucial role in preserving and promoting pure local customs and traditions,and also serve as a rich source of material for linguistics and philology.In terms of performance,the development and maturation of performing skills in each opera genre are closely intertwined with its living environment,customs and other external factors.关键词
