A Textual Research on the Origin of the Name"Kaolaolao"for a Shanxi Noodle Dish

Abstract
Kaolaolao(pronounced[kǎo lǎo lǎo])is a well-known noodle snack in the Jin-speaking region of China.This study investigates the origin of the name"Kaolaolao"from three perspectives:phonetic evolution,semantic extension and cultural dissemination.It is concluded that there are three reasons for naming this noodle dish"Kaolaolao".From a phonetic perspective,"Kaolaolao"[khɔˀlɔlɔ]evolved from"Ke"[khɔ],i.e.[khɔ](Ke)>[khəˀlɔ](a disyllabic split word)>[khɔˀlɔ]>[khɔˀlɔlɔ].In terms of semantic extension,"Kaolaolao"has derived multiple extended meanings through the compounding mechanism of single-character semantics.From the perspective of dietary cultural dissemination,Shanxi noodles underwent localized name reconstruction during their spread from north to south,eventually establishing the specific regionally characteristic name"Kaolaolao".关键词
