Abstract
Compared with traditional lossless syntax-level communication,semantic communication allows a certain degree of discrepancy between the recovered and original information,as long as the downstream task performance remains unaffected.This feature enables more efficient communication.Focusing on semantic communication,this paper categorizes its potential use cases in mobile communication networks into four types.The first type assumes that the source is visible to the radio access network(RAN),and joint source-channel coding is applied.The second type considers source-invisible scenarios where the channel encoder or decoder utilizes source information.The third type also treats the source as invisible but employs pure source coding.The fourth type assumes source visibility in the RAN and adopts pure source coding.Further,we conduct simulations for the first type,provide architectural analysis for the second type,and analyze the key challenges and standardization impacts associated with the above categories.Finally,initial research recommendations are presented,aiming to support future investigations and standardization efforts in semantic communication.关键词
