Abstract

Zinc sulfate hydroxide nanosheets were synthesized using a chemical precipitation method and added to sodium alginate film as a filler to prepare zinc sulfate hydroxide/sodium alginate composite films.The structure,morphology and chemical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning elec-tron microscopy(SEM)and Fourier-transformed infrared spectrum(FT-IR).Microbial culture was used to evalu-ate the antibacterial properties of the samples,and the tensile properties and water vapor and oxygen barrier proper-ties of the composite films were tested.The results demonstrated that zinc sulfate hydroxide nanosheets exhibited significantly higher antibacterial activity compared to zinc oxide nanoparticles.When the mass fraction of zinc sul-fate hydroxide nanosheets was 0.5%,the composite film achieved a bacteriostatic rate of 100%against E.coli and S.aureus.With an increase in the mass fraction of zinc sulfate hydroxide nanosheets,the water vapor barrier prop-erties and flexibility of the composite film were significantly improved.This study indicates that inorganic antibacte-rial agents with nanosheet morphology can be applied as multifunctional modified fillers in the field of biodegradable packaging films.
