Abstract

This study aimed to assess the effects of mixed silage diet with Astragalus Bunge residue and whole-crop corn on growth performance,slaughter performance,visceral organ development and meat quality of 60-day-old Hu sheep.Sixty ram lambs with similar genetic backgrounds and body weights were randomly assigned to 4 groups(I,II,III,IV),each group consisted of 5 repetitions,with 3 sheep per repetition.The 4 groups were fed mixed silage of As-tragalus Bunge residue and whole-crop corn at ratios of 0:100,5:95,10:90 and 15:85,respectively.The ratio of con-centrate to roughage in the dietary was 50:50(dry matter basis).Pre-experiment period was 7 days,followed by a 90-day experimental period.One sheep per replicate in each group was selected at the end of the experiment,and a total of 20 sheep were slaughtered.The results showed that feeding mixed silage showed a tendency to increase the feed intake of Hu sheep.Group II had the highest daily weight gain,significantly higher than the other groups(P<0.05),while groups III and IV had significantly higher daily weight gain than group I(P<0.05).The feed to weight ratio of groupⅡwas the lowest,significantly lower than group I(P<0.05),while there were no significant differences among the other groups(P>0.05).Feeding mixed silage could significantly increase the live weight before slaughter,carcass weight,GR value,and eye muscle area of Hu sheep(P<0.05),with group II exhibiting the greatest improvement.Regarding slaugh-ter rate,group IV showed significantly higher value than group I(P<0.05),while no significant differences were ob-served among other groups(P>0.05).Feeding mixed silage could promote the development of liver,spleen,lung,testis,omasum and abomasum of Hu sheep.The yellowness(b*)of mutton in group IV was significantly higher than that in group II(P<0.05),while no significant differences were observed in meat color indexes among other groups(P>0.05).Feeding mixed silage could significantly increase the water loss rate of mutton(P<0.05),but had no significant effects on pH,shear force and cooked meat rate(P>0.05).In summary,under this experimental conditions,feeding mixed si-lage with Astragalus Bunge residue and whole-crop corn could improve the growth performance and slaughter perfor-mance of Hu sheep,promote the development of their organs,and the optimal ratio for mixing silage was 5:95.
