Epidemiological Characteristics and Risk Factors of Canine and Feline Brucellosis in Urumqi and Changji Cities of Xinjiang

Abstract
In order to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors of canine and feline brucellosis in Urumqi and Changji cities of Xinjiang,1 298 serum samples were collected from dogs and cats(853 and 445,respectively)under medical treatment in pet hospitals in the two cities from March 2023 to February 2025,for serum antibody test by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(iELISA),and then for analysis on epidemiological characteristics and risk factors of brucellosis in combination with questionnaires.The results showed that the total positive rate of brucellosis was 3.78%in the two cities,the positive rate of dogs(4.69%)was significantly higher than that of cats(2.02%);the antibody positive rate was observed without significant difference in different years(4.38%in 2023 and 3.05%in 2024)or different seasons(6.29%in autumn and 2.86%in winter),higher in Changji(7.69%)than that in Urumqi(2.97%),and higher in native dogs and cats(6.08%)than that in pedigreed ones(3.09%),increasing with age,and reaching 8.33%in pets aged≥10 years."self-adoption of stray animals"(OR=5.42)and"adoption from rescue organizations"(OR=7.63)were identified as major risk factors.In conclusion,brucellosis was prevalent in pets in the two cities,with certain spatial and inter-population distribution patterns,posing certain public health risk.It was thus recommended to continuously monitor brucellosis and to improve awareness campaigns about disease prevention and control,as well as management interventions for stray animals.关键词
